The Yoga retreat will be lead by Shantala T. Medappa, a native of Coorg, an area in India which I really feel the closest to the Irish way of hospitality. The afternoons will be spent touring to Ballymaloe (Rachel Allen), Kinsale, Inchadoney Spa, Beaches, visit Cafes, Craft Stores, Meet Artists, Walking, Sightseeing...we have a wonderful itinerary planned.

Your personal guides and drivers on the holiday will be Áine & Liam Edwards, a father and daughter team, who both understand the needs of an Indian guest and are passionate about sharing their love of Ireland with you. So you will feel truly pampered with 4 people to take care of you in a group of maximum 8 guests. The rooms will be based on a person sharing cost, and we will ensure that the group and personal needs of all of you will be taken care of before and during the holiday to Ireland.

All the details and costs are outlined in the 4 posters, do contact me for any more details:

aine@aineedwardsconsultancy.com +91-8939291905 (INDIA) +353-86-6680952 (IRELAND)

How can musicians from other cultures find a way in to Indian music?

http://www.aineedwardsconsultancy.com/blog/how-can-musicians-from-other-cultures-find-a-way-in-to-indian-music

http://www.aineedwardsconsultancy.com/blog/how-can-musicians-from-other-cultures-find-a-way-in-to-indian-music#comments

Uncategorized

In a strange twist of fate, through Cork/Chennai consultant Áine Edwards, we also met the great accordion player Tony MacMahon, who was at that time staying in India. and I joined the night rescue team of The Hope Foundation, supported by Irish Aid. We spent 3 hours driving through areas of Calcutta where people live on the street or in slums or work in the red light district. This is very real and distressing. What touched me more than anything is the work that The Hope Foundation are doing. We drive and walk past these people everyday, but who are they, where have they come from, what's their story? Does anybody care?

The first group we checked ended up in the city, after a natural disaster struck their rural home, they have lived on the pavement for the last 25 years. The group in the nighttime photos are Muslim, so the social worker turned her shawl into a makeshift hijab, for their comfort. They've lived under the main highway for 30 years, running water is a 1.5 km walk away and the children don't go to school. On the pavement outside a set of shops and nearby a bar, lay a group of families, including one with 8 children, who all lay sleeping next to each other, their father passed away recently.

During the day the shops are open, so they must pack-up and the kids go to a government school nearby. We met one lady who was 8 months pregnant, her baby will be born in a government hospital. One group had banter with us and said the social workers were 'no help' because they give 'no money'. They are farming people who migrate to the city temporarily to beg and live near Park St. and Sudder St. They are used to getting cash from tourists, sometimes in foreign currency. The social workers of course do help, they are very much concerned with their health, education and childcare. Long-term they care very much, the night rescue patrols are carried out 13 nights a month, with a follow-up for people who need immediate care.

I had to see with my own eyes the extent to which The Hope Foundation work with the people who live on the streets and slums of Calcutta. They are truly an incredible organisation who is doing mind-blowing work in partnerships with local NGO's, Government and the Police. They make a HUGE difference for many people's lives. Maureen Forrest is an Irish woman with a huge heart and vision, to build the professional team and transparent foundation to support the people living on the street in Calcutta. This organisation deserves to be supported in any way possible.

www.hope-foundation.in
www.hopechild.org/about-us.aspx

St Patricks Day in Chennai, South India

http://www.aineedwardsconsultancy.com/blog/st-patricks-day-in-chennai-south-india

http://www.aineedwardsconsultancy.com/blog/st-patricks-day-in-chennai-south-india#comments

Uncategorized

This was my third St. Patrick's Day celebration in Chennai, South India. Thanks to the opening of the Hon Irish Consul in 2013, and a little networking in both Ireland and India, we have a small community in the city, who catch-up at least once a year around St. Patrick's Day. Small is under 10 people in a city of 8 million. There are a lot of people in India and very few of them are Irish. We maybe small in numbers, but we're big in spirit and proud to be Irish in India. Now the Indians and other foreigners are joining us in turning the place green once a year; a touch of Irish.

St. Patricks, a well-respected school in the city, closes for the day and celebrates the feast of their founder. There are large shamrocks on the gates of the school, yet most people in Chennai have never heard of Ireland. However, this is changing. Ireland is playing cricket in the world cup, and cricket is like a religion here. With a population of 1.2 billion, where most people have a TV, there are a lot of people watching cricket. I've seen a family, who live on the side of the train tracks in steels huts, watching cricket on a TV sitting outside, with a fire going to cook. They may never know what a Guinness is, but they would have cheered on the green team in World Cup matches.

Our next export to facilitate a good St. Patrick's Day is an Irish pub, with live music and some craic. In a rapidly developing urban India, the middle class want to enjoy a good night out. So why not an Irish pub in India? There is a chain of Irish Houses; the domestic terminal has one, and there is soon to be one in the international airport terminal and at a shopping mall in the city. For those in the city who love music, there is The Moon and Sixpence, a bar/restaurant which was shipped to Chennai and built in a hotel. This was where the party was last Saturday: bar staff in Green, drinks were Green, the music was loud, there was dancing and singing and the Irish numbered about 5 to 245 Indians, but we sang...oh we sang.

The following day, the Irish Hon Consul hosted a daytime brunch in a club called Dublin; what a buzz! There were about 250 Indians again and a few Paddies dotted among them. Guests wore from a touch to a lot of green, donned head boppers, flashing shamrock necklaces, and beads were presented on entry. Sr. Loreto (who celebrated her 70th year in Chennai last December) found a perch, popped her feet up, and mingled with those who came to chat. Otherwise she watched the passers by as they drank Champagne, Irish coffees and Whiskey. Safe to say, the Chennaites, who enjoy a dance and a party, partied like the Indians for an Irish festival.

http://thewildgeese.com/profiles/blogs/st-patricks-day-in-chennai-india

The Moon and Sixpence - Irish Built Venue

http://www.aineedwardsconsultancy.com/blog/the-moon-and-sixpence-irish-built-venue

http://www.aineedwardsconsultancy.com/blog/the-moon-and-sixpence-irish-built-venue#comments

Uncategorized

      [...]
